Bathing Under Stars

Night has always soothed me more, far too bright

that star of day, too harsh. And my strange ways

too dark to withstand daylight . . . But it plays

too well within your skin, paled by cold blight

of winter’s stubborn thrall. You need that light

as much as I need shadows and these strays

who dance with me in night’s sky. How it plays

nurture to my soul! Heart’s solace—delight!

Yet from my cave I crawl at your beckons;

summoned like Cerberus, I heel and pant,

roll over, play dead . . . and my heart reckons

it a small price to endure one instant

under too harsh a star for your sake. Ours

night and day—I’ll be bathing under stars.
