More than I Can Chew
Ever my tendency
to set too high
arbitrary bars
to challenge myself
to excel—myself
I walk in Sisyphus’ footsteps
walk in Sisyphus’ footsteps
in Sisyphus’ footsteps
Sisyphus’ footsteps
footsteps
steps
It comes to this—
one
step
at
a
time . . .
Journey of a thousand miles
one
step
at
a
time
Eat an elephant
one bite at a time
lest it be
more than I can chew.
And this bottle
is the best [...]

Keeping New Eyes New
Suzuki taught us to keep beginners’
minds. Each moment a new reality,
ancient as the world, yet newborn. Did he
assume new eyes? Imply that beginners’
minds see with fresh eyes? Yes. And each dinner’s
only in this moment—reality
perpetual in the now, here. No gritty
cynicism. No jaded-heart sinners.
We learn together this ever-giving
renewal, despite flashing delusions
that hint impermanence. [...]

Pouring Wine
This is my sacrament
nobody’s blood—
save maybe Mother Earth’s—
simply an elegant wine
full of the richness of life
and incomplete
without the ambiance
created by this gathering
fine folks sharing in common
this wine
this moment
this evening.
For this moment
in this conscious action
I become Dionysus
to drink my own blood
and know
that we are all
holy and blessed
in the sacrament
of this communion
this wine
this moment
this evening.

beauty surrounds and inundates everything;
our blindness to it is the only true tragedy
Beauty surrounds and inundates all
today my eyes are open to this
today my heart is open to this
now my spirit soars in beauty!
[This came from a reply to a comment on my blog; it seemed appropriate for a mantra and a short poem in [...]

Time to Grow Up
Well, I guess it’s time
to get up off my proverbial haunches
roll up my sleeves
and decide who I am
Can’t wait
forever
for someone else
to come along
and remind me
who I was
before
or before that
or even yesterday
Now
time
to buck up
step out
step up
and make
something
of my life . . .

We Charge Ahead
Sword high, arcs low
head rolls
first martyr
revolution
commences
Yet—
our pens are more
mighty than swords
We sling ink
to enrich life
not to end
aught
but to re-
create
Life
vibrant
and well-
lived

In the Beginning
Nothing
And yet
a nothing charged with potential
and from the potential
All.
And All, knowing in this moment
I AM
said, “There is light.”
And there was light
and it was good.
I AM
searched I AM
and coming to Self-knowledge
said
“Here is creation.”
And it was good.
And in this moment
All
and
nothing.
Yet
The nothing was never
void
for the void was full always
with potential
whence creation
in this moment
manifests into perpetuity—
which is
this [...]

Shake Your Glitter Orb
Young romance is a glitter orb, shake it
and watch red rose petals float like snowflakes
until age mellows the urge, or cools it.
We race here and there, chasing elusive “it”
because our blood races and nature makes
us young with romance. That glitter orb, shake it
to see the petals once more. Springs will sit
within awaiting [...]

Freeway Called Dharma
On this road to constant discovery,
the present remain present and grounded
to the concrete while spirit wanders free
learning each moment in its moment, each—
ember in Eternity’s combustion—
shooting, star-like, through cosmos in cosmos
infinite miasma of One collective cosmos
at whose center is each discovery
and discoverer. One combustion
of life into life, and all life grounded
into one. Myriadic [...]

Waiting for Something to Sing About
See that lark? What do you think?
He’s not singing. For what does he wait?
A perfect note that might occur to him,
or maybe for the mailman? A win
from some lottery? Luck, love, or response
on his latest resumé? Is he unemployed?
Looks well-dressed to me. Ready for
whatever larks lark on. Fun or food,
sex [...]
